PERSONAL GROWTH SERIES I THE ART OF BEING HUMAN
.
Professionals working in helping and caregiving roles are routinely exposed to high levels of emotional demand, cognitive load, and nervous system activation. Over time, this sustained exposure can contribute to dysregulation, burnout, and reduced capacity for presence and attunement. Increasingly, somatic approaches are being recognized as essential complements to cognitive and relational models of care, offering practical methods for understanding and supporting regulation through the body.
This one-day micro-credential workshop introduces participants to the foundational principles of somatics and the applied use of breathwork as a regulation-based practice within helping professions. The workshop is designed for educators, healthcare workers, therapists, social service professionals, and others working in service-oriented roles who are seeking evidence-informed, body-based tools to support both personal wellbeing and professional effectiveness.
Participants will be guided through an overview of somatic theory, with attention to how stress, emotional labour, and prolonged caregiving are experienced and stored in the body. The workshop will explore nervous system function from a somatic perspective, emphasizing interoception, embodied awareness, and the distinction between cognitive understanding and lived physiological experience. Particular focus will be placed on recognizing patterns of activation and depletion that commonly arise in helping roles, and on identifying pathways back to regulation and safety.
Breathwork will be introduced as a central somatic intervention, with attention to the physiology of breathing and its direct influence on nervous system state. Participants will learn how breath patterns both reflect and shape emotional regulation, attention, and resilience. The workshop will examine breathwork as a self-regulation strategy for helping professionals, as well as a supportive tool that can be integrated ethically and appropriately within professional settings, in accordance with scope of practice and organizational context.
The learning format integrates lecture-based instruction with experiential learning, allowing participants to engage directly with the practices being discussed. Experiential components are designed to deepen understanding through embodied participation, while maintaining a professional, accessible, and trauma-informed approach. Reflection and integration periods will support participants in translating theory into practical application.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a clearer understanding of how somatic awareness and breath-based practices can support regulation, presence, and sustainability in helping roles. The workshop emphasizes practical application, ethical consideration, and professional relevance, offering participants tools that can be immediately applied within their own lives and, where appropriate, within their professional practice.

Students will gain an understanding of key brain systems involved in gratitude and attentional processes, including the Reticular Activating System, medial prefrontal cortex, and ventral striatum. The course integrates contemporary neuroscience research, attentional theory, and applied practices—such as gratitude journaling—to demonstrate how repeated cognitive focus can shape neural pathways, influence salience detection, and alter perceptual and behavioural patterns over time.Within this framework, “manifestation” is examined through a neuroscience lens: not as the creation of external events, but as the result of changes in attention, expectation, and goal-directed behaviour that influence how individuals perceive and engage with opportunities in their environment.
Through interactive activities and real-world applications, students will explore how gratitude functions as a form of attention training, contributing to shifts in awareness, emotional experience, and decision-making.This course bridges neuroscience and applied practice, offering a deeper understanding of how intentional cognitive focus can reshape neural processing and influence lived experience.

Lessons Include:
Foundations of Gratitude and Cognitive Appraisal
The Brain on Gratitude: Prefrontal Cortex and Reward Systems

A Professor’s Perspective
Dr. Taryn E. Grieder, M.Ed., Ph.D.
PhD, Medical Science, Neuroscience and Addiction
“Neural Network Therapy® (NNT) focuses on neuroplasticity, or changing the brain, to modify patterns of brain activity that lead to negative experiences. NNT® helps clients understand their brain function while developing mindfulness and behavioural skills, which helps them rewire brain patterns that lead to negative thoughts, emotions and behaviours.”
Dr. Taryn Grieder is a Psychology Professor at Trent University, currently teaching Abnormal Psychology: Neuroscience Perspectives and Behaviour Modification. She also has Theories of Psychopathology, Psychotherapy and Health Psychology at the Mississauga Academy of Medicine, and Abnormal Psychology and Psychology of Addictions at TMU on her roster of courses. She is currently working on a number of community-based research projects, one of which involves investigating the effectiveness of NNT® and psychedelic assisted therapy in the treatment of trauma and addictions. Canadian Family Health Counselling has also teamed up with Dr. Grieder as a community partner on a research study looking at the impact of daily gratitude journaling on mental health and well-being.

Program Testimonials
The EHP program provided me with valuable insight into how our brain works, especially in relation to our emotions, as well as exercises to use in session that bring these concepts home to clients. I regularly use the material I learned in the EHP program and find it applicable to a variety of client issues. I was also lucky enough to participate in practicum concurrent with my EHP studies. This was my first time counselling and I was provided with compassionate support while I grew my confidence in this field.
-Cathy Hooper, Emotional Health Practitioner graduate 2020,
Masters in Counselling Psychology (final practicum) CRPO
The concepts are presented in a simple and elegant way, but are underlied by complexity and key scientific principles - a perfect marriage.
-Kathryn Matheson, MA Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies, Holistic Nutritionist
The Emotional Health Practitioner Program is an excellent way for new graduates to gain a better understanding of the brain and neuroplasticity. The program provides practical information and activities paired with peer learning and supervision to help gain an understanding of how change happens. This program has not only assisted me in making healthier habits in my personal life, but my clients too. I highly recommend this program!
-Heather Vance, Emotional Health Practitioner Graduate 2017,
BA Social Work (in progress) Addictions and Mental Health Worker
Personally, and professionally, I have greatly benefited from the EHP program. The focus on education and using one’s strengths, along with doable, motivating, and even fun activities, lightens many heavy, complex, and real-life struggles that we face. Aurrora has incredible energy, passion and humour that ignites the inner child to get curious and active. The content and instruction offer a reconnection with self, others, and a reminder to trust in one’s inner guide. The visuals, hands-on practical exercises, along with the use of common understandable language is a valuable investment for self.
This amazing experience has provided me with a tool kit for life and a reminder that I am enough as a human-“being” instead of a human-“doer”.
- Emotional Health Practitioner graduate 2022,
Masters in Counselling Psychology (in progress) CRPO (in progress)
The Emotional Heath Practitioner Program has been the perfect adjunct to my current education and work experience that propelled me into the field of counselling.
Not only have I been able to learn skills practical for my own emotional well-being, I now have transferable skills and knowledge to help others with their own emotional health journey.
The learning environment has been comfortable and supportive in helping me feel confident with the material. I highly recommend the EHP program to anyone looking into counselling as a career.
-Kristy Suckling, Emotional Health Practitioner graduate 2022, RPN
The Emotional Health Practitioner program is unique because it focuses on brain health and the impact that has on our emotional well-being. The content is delivered energetically, using humour and imagery and lots of hands-on exercises. Kim and her team display such passion for the topic! The techniques I learned through the EHP program have helped me to guide my clients to self-discovery and awareness, learning to make healthy choices based on understanding the connection between their brain, their physical health and their emotional health. It has been the most rewarding professional development education I have ever encountered.
-Krissie Vanderburg, Emotional Health Practitioner graduate 2004, RPN
