neuroscience, meet counselling

There is a terrible rumour floating around that therapy is miserable.

There’s a belief that unless you’re grinding it out week after week in an endless sea of tears, you’re not doing it right.

This simply isn’t true.

Behavioural change requires repetition. But repetition doesn’t need to be boring or painful, it can be creative and fun. In fact, the more creative the experience, the better the staying power. What is the point of therapy if it doesn’t stick? Staying power is everything.

Creativity sprouts new brains cells. This translates as an increase in energy and a boost in mood. As we harness creativity to generate changes in thought and behaviour, we’ll also get… smarter. How’s that for an incentive?

Neural Network Therapy® is backed by science. It's all about brain health, which is where your emotional health recovery begins.

  • Nope! In traditional talk therapy, we would examine each of your memories with a microscope. You could spend a lifetime examining your childhood, and some do. While it's all we had for a very long time, therapy needs an upgrade. The brain can't tell the difference between real or imagined. When you continue to talk about your stories of old, your brain lights up the very same neural networks you're trying to dismantle. You are reinforcing unwanted thoughts and behaviours.

We can do better than that. We know more now.

Haven’t heard of NNT®?

Neural Network Therapy® emerged in 1997 as an alternative to traditional talk therapy, largely in response to advancements in neuroscience.

There was a time when science believed we had a finite number of neurons and when they died, they died. We know a whole lot more now. New findings in neuroscience should be reflected in the ways we address emotional health care.

Simply put, a neural network is a habit that’s formed in the brain.

We’re made up of countless neural networks that determine our thinking and behaviour. But most of our neural networks are wired-up all willy nilly. Anything that happened a lot of times in a row, became our habit in thinking or behaviour.

We are emotional creatures and when we find ourselves feeling stuck, this most often means old wiring is conflicting with new ideas. And it’s time for change.

Trudging uphill to create change is old school science. Generating short-cuts to feel-good emotions and healthy habits in behaviour, now that’s what therapy is all about!

Where We Are

Canadian Family Health Counselling is located at 155 Hunter Street East, in a beautiful heritage building in Peterborough Ontario’s quaint village of East City.

Our Clinical Director, Kim Sargent completed her Internship at the Hospital for Sick Children and moved to Peterborough to begin the Counselling Practice at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1997. In an effort to leave behind the more clinical setting, she restored our building offering a calm and inviting space to deliver innovative exercises that are steeped in science.

Virtual vs In Person Counselling

Canadian Family Health Counselling recognizes the importance of accessible counselling services to meet the needs of those seeking support. Our Counsellors are here for you, offering the same quality counselling services virtually and by telephone.

McMaster University has conducted a recent study showing that virtual counselling is even more effective than face-to-face therapy.
